Kenya secured a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), despite facing domestic criticism from the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC).
The KHRC raised concerns about Kenya’s human rights record, citing rampant police violence, restrictions on freedom of expression, and discriminatory practices against marginalized groups. They argued that Kenya’s membership in the UNHRC would undermine the council’s credibility and its mandate to hold human rights violators accountable.
“There has been a culture of impunity, with many Kenyans suffering from severe human rights violations that may constitute crimes against humanity,” read the statement.

On September 27, 2024, Kenya applied to join the UN Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term, committing to “advance and protect human rights for all.” However, this does not match the country’s situation.

However, the Kenyan government defended its election, emphasizing its commitment to promoting human rights globally.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei stated that Kenya’s membership would put the country on the global map and allow it to advocate for human rights protection worldwide.
“Today Ambassador Ekitele Lokaale joined members of the UN General Assembly in the election of 18 members to the UNHRC. Kenya officially secured a seat on the Council,” read the statement in part.
“The overwhelming support received demonstrates the trust & confidence the international community has bestowed upon Kenya.
Kenya’s election to the UNHRC comes at a time when the country faces domestic challenges related to human rights. Recent protests against the 2024 Finance Bill, for example, resulted in deaths, unlawful detentions, and excessive police force.
The KHRC called on the international community to consider Kenya’s human rights record before supporting its membership in the UNHRC. They argued that granting Kenya a seat would send a troubling message to other nations regarding the consequences of state-sponsored violence and repression.
